Proper maintenance of the biological safety cabinet keeps it working at maximum efficiency while reducing any exposure to the operator.
1. Regular Cleaning - Clean bench surfaces and filters with appropriate cleaning agents and techniques.
2. Filter Replacement - Replace filters at least once a year or according to the guidelines specified by the manufacturer.
3. Leak Detection - Check airflow patterns, pressure differentials, and check each filter is seated correctly.
4. Authorized Service – Have any interruptions in functionality addressed with an authorized service provider as soon as possible.
Properly maintained BSC’s will continue to provide clean workspaces and protection for the operator and environment.
Filter Replacement
Chemicals, dust, and other contaminants can clog air filters or decrease their effectiveness, reducing the protection from biological or contaminates present in the research area. The frequency for filter changes must be guided by manufacturer instructions.
The filter changing procedure should follow the steps mentioned below:
1. Turn off the unit's power supply and wait for the cabinet's fans to stop running.
2. Remove the end face plate on the filter where applicable.
3. Pull out the filter and replace it with a new one.
4. Discard old filter units safely, according to hazardous material regulations.
5. Replace the end face plate and turn on the unit’s power supply.
6. Allow the unit to run for a set number of minutes before using the work area.
It is recommended to consult the manufacturer’s manual for proper filter replacement protocols.
